Short answer: the Akai MPC Sample Key is a keyboard-based companion to the MPC Sample that Akai previewed in two Instagram teasers on October 28, 2026, saying it will open the firmware so users can add features and sound engines. Akai has not announced a price, a release date or full specs, and has not said whether the stock firmware source code will be published.

What Akai showed

According to MusicRadar, the Sample Key appears to be a companion to the MPC Sample released in March 2026. Instead of a 4x4 pad grid it has a two-octave, 25-key keyboard (the video says 24 keys), pitch and mod wheels, a built-in speaker and a central display surrounded by knobs and buttons. It can sample individual keys and create automatic key splits.

The two teasers show user-made software on the device: a chord machine built with Claude, a version of Native Instruments' Massive, and several units running different vibe-coded synths, including virtual analog, FM and wavetable designs.

The Behringer connection

Behringer had unveiled the KICK a day earlier. MusicRadar notes that Akai has not mentioned the KICK and calls the timing a likely response, which it labels speculation. The Radio In Altum video, "Akai Answered Behringer... With Their Cheapest Box", takes the same reading and adds an opinion: Akai opened the simplest machine it has, and if the company is serious, it should open the MPC One.

What is still unknown

What the video argues

The chapters of the video run through KICK vs Sample Key, a plea to open the MPC One, community hacks and "the new era", respect for affordable gear and what the big channels are saying. The point worth keeping is the one on affordable gear: whatever the strategy, more makers opening firmware gives musicians more choice.

The rest of the story is in the IGNITE and SP1200X articles, and the full channel list is on every Radio In Altum video in order.
